History

Moffat was established in 1890 by the San Luis Town and Improvement Company. It was thought to be a good central railroad location between Alamosa and Salida, with Villa Grove to the north, Saguache to the west, and the farming communities of Hooper and Mosca to the south. Naturally, Moffat was named after David Moffat, president of the Denver, Rio Grande, and western Railroad. At the turn of the 20th century, it was recognized as the "queen city" of the Valley with as many as 2,500 residents. Two passenger trains ran daily, and each arrival was greeted by the nine-piece town band. Moffat was a central shipping point for Saguache County. Until the advent of the trucking industry, Moffat was ranked as the second largest livestock loading point in the state. The lineage of those founding ranchers is still represented by numerous families that ranch in this area to this very day.

Recreation and Attractions

When you're looking at Moffat real estate, a yurt may not be high on your list. However, you can rent a yurt (sort of an old Central Asian tent) and enjoy a great getaway at the Joyful Journey Hot Springs Spa outside of Moffat. A hotel has now been added for those less interested in a yurt. Tepees are another option. This is truly a place at the north end of the San Luis Valley where you and your guests can get "off the grid." Yes, there are no TVs. The hot mineral springs are, of course, the big attraction, and the dressing rooms are clean and comfortable. The Willow Spring Bed & Breakfast invokes memories of the heyday of the mining era. The Victorian home is nicely complemented by quilts, art, and numerous antiques. The owners are very welcoming, and they serve an excellent breakfast.
Those considering Moffat houses can look forward to visiting the Great Sand Dunes National Park. The tallest sand dunes in all of North America are the big attraction here, but visitors can head up,to the higher elevations and even alpine lakes, aspen and conifer forests, and even tundra. Don't leave without trying some sand sledding! It’s always easy to splash around in Medano Creek afterward to clean off.
